Keanu Isaksson, 25, and Luca Zylstra, 19, have been airlifted to safety from Mount Popomanaseu in central Guadalcanal after being stranded for six days in torrential rain and impassable terrain.
Airlift to Honiara
A rescue helicopter located the pair at 1,828 metres on Mount Popomanaseu and lowered a cargo net, allowing them to climb aboard and fly back to Honiara. The helicopter did not have a winch and could not land in the steep ravine where the men were trapped.
The crew dropped food and a radio to the stranded climbers before instructing them to fell trees to clear space for the net. Both men were able to complete the task and were flown to safety on Tuesday morning.
Why the Descent Failed
Isaksson and Zylstra summited with the help of guides from a local tribe, but the guides could not lead them back down because the descent path crossed into a different tribal area. Torrential rain then made the steep terrain impossible to traverse.
The pair camped on a rock overlooking a waterfall for six days. Their mother, Denise Holl, said they were extremely lucky the rivers did not rise higher, as the rising water would have washed them over the waterfall.
Family Relief and Adventure Context
Ms Holl described her son and Zylstra as very close friends who had done many adventures together. She said they were both nonchalant and emotional when she spoke to them, and that they had taken very good care of each other.
The two men travelled to the Solomon Islands in search of a remote climbing adventure and as preparation for an upcoming trip to the Amazon. Ms Holl said the family was ecstatic and shaking with relief after the week-long ordeal.
