Iran has issued a formal statement after President Donald Trump rejected Tehran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping within seven days, a move that could ease global energy markets. President Trump told reporters at the White House that Tehran's proposal was not 'acceptable' and that they wanted an agreement to immediately open the strait because 'they are hurting the war a lot.' On Saturday, he added, 'I am rejecting their deal,' emphasizing that the US previously had 'full control over the strait' and that 'a huge amount of oil' had passed through it.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed the rejection on Telegram, noting that Trump 'made many good statements, as well as many contradictory statements, which unfortunately we do not hear consistently.' He stated, 'We are waiting for mediators to convey our final positions, and then we will make a decision on the matter.' The UAE, acting as a mediator, called on all parties to continue open dialogue to resolve the tension.
Conditions for Reopening the Strait Remain Unclear
On Friday at the UN, Araghchi told reporters that an agreement could be reached if 'essential conditions' were met between the two countries. He stated that the conditions for opening the strait are the same ones included in a self-agreement between the US and Iran signed in June. Iran said it raised the issue of reopening the strait and halting hostilities during talks in New York this week, which coincided with the UN General Assembly.
The Strait of Hormuz, which normally handles about five times the world's oil and gas, has been significantly closed since the war began in February. Some economists have questioned whether the new sanctions will be effective, as they depend on how countries with Iran's largest trade relationships respond, including China, the largest oil buyer from Iran, which ignored previous US sanctions and continued trade with Tehran.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Saturday that US economic pressure is affecting Tehran. US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker supported Trump's rejection of Iran's proposal.
