A former German police officer on a working holiday visa in Broome, Western Australia, says she was assaulted and filmed by a group of five teenage girls while cycling through the town on Monday. The victim, who requested her surname not be published, told the ABC she was left bruised and bleeding after the group chased her and her friend through a park before they escaped.
The Attack
Sina and a friend were riding their bicycles through Broome, 2,000 kilometres north of Perth, when they encountered the group of five teenage girls. The women attempted to ride away but reached a dead end, at which point the girls were reportedly waiting for them at the end of the street.
Sina said the group then chased them through a park, throwing balls, a basket, sticks and stones at them. She noted that one of the girls was filming the incident on a phone while the teenagers also attempted to break their bicycles.
Police Response
After escaping the attack, Sina immediately contacted Broome police. She described the response as disinterested and lazy, saying it would not make sense to proceed because her impending departure from Australia meant the case could not go to court.
She was also told the girls would be unlikely to face serious consequences because they were under 16. Sina said Broome police only reached out to her after the ABC made initial inquiries about the attack.
Aftermath
Sina said she felt like she was no longer a human being in the eyes of the attackers and that she was now wary and scared of being attacked again. She expressed frustration that the police response did not match the seriousness of the crime.
A WA Police spokesperson confirmed the incident was being investigated but was unable to make further comment. Sina said she did not want to appear on the video of the attack, noting there were two crimes to punish: the physical assault and the filming.
