The 2026 National NAIDOC Week Awards took place in Mparntwe (Alice Springs), recognising seven individuals and three groups for outstanding contributions to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Australia.
Lifetime Achievement and Person of the Year honours
Aunty Rhoda Roberts AO was posthumously awarded the 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award after losing her battle with a rare type of ovarian cancer earlier this year. The judges praised her for elevating First Nations voices through storytelling, performance and cultural leadership, describing her as a visionary whose influence transformed Australia's artistic landscape.
Aunty Pat Turner AO received the 2026 Person of the Year title for her lifelong service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. She made history in the 1990s as the first Aboriginal person and first woman to serve as chief executive of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC). Turner stepped down from her latest leadership roles in March 2026 after helping negotiate the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
Elders and community leaders recognised for transformative work
Christine Corby AM was named Female Elder of the Year for her decades of work in Aboriginal health in north-west New South Wales. As leader of Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service, she helped grow the organisation from a small shopfront into a community-controlled health service employing around 100 staff and delivering thousands of consultations each year.
Dr Stephen Hagan was awarded Male Elder of the Year for his advocacy work as a proud Kullilli Kooma man from far south-west Queensland. He was a key driver in rebranding Coon Cheese and removing derogatory words from the Scrabble board game, and brought racial discrimination cases against the then-Sky News program Outsiders, Channel 9's Today Show, the Daily Mail and Krispy Kreme.
Young talent and organisations celebrated for innovation
Caitlyn Costello won Sportsperson of the Year, Tyson Neal-Edwards was named Youth of the Year, and Kaylene Whiskey received the Creative Talent Award. Southern Aboriginal Corporation Ltd was honoured with the Caring for Country and Culture Award, while The Murri School won the Education Award for its work with Aboriginal and Islander students.
The Young Indigenous Women's STEM Academy was awarded the Innovation Award. National NAIDOC committee co-chairs Aunty Lynette Riley and Steven Satour said the ceremony serves as an opportunity to highlight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander excellence across Australia and a reminder of this nation's 65,000-year-old history.
