Queen Mother Her Majesty Best Kemigisa responded on Thursday, September 10, stating that the decision ignored her son's will, which she said had clearly outlined the order of succession to the Tooro throne. She expressed frustration that the announcement was made while her son's body was still at the palace and before the family had been given time to grieve.
King Oyo's Legacy and Final Days
King Oyo Nyimba died on August 27 in the United States, where he had been receiving treatment for cancer. He was 34 years old and had become king at the age of three in 1995, a record that earned him a place in Guinness World Records as the world's youngest reigning monarch. He reigned for 31 years and served as a United Nations goodwill ambassador.
Oyo's will was read on the day of his death in the presence of members of the royal family and government representatives, including the minister representing the president. According to the Queen Mother, those present had agreed to meet the following day to discuss the succession, but instead, a group of clan members held a press conference that same evening and announced a new king.
Security Concerns and Burial Preparations
The Queen Mother reported that security forces had been deployed around the palace and that members of the royal family were being prevented from freely leaving or receiving visitors. She appealed to the Ugandan government and the military to allow the family to mourn and bury Oyo peacefully, expressing gratitude for President Yoweri Museveni's help in arranging for Oyo's body to be brought back to Uganda.
