Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Cairo on Tuesday for his first visit to Egypt in a decade, days after a joint air exercise featuring Chinese J-16 fighter jets for the first time in Africa. The three-day trip will include meetings with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as both nations expand their defence partnership.
Joint Air Exercise Marks New Milestone
Beijing conducted its first comprehensive air exercise management system demonstration days before Xi's arrival, deploying J-16 fighters, YY-20A aerial refuelling aircraft, KJ-500 early warning planes and transport aircraft. The exercise began in Beijing and travelled over 6,000 km to Cairo, showcasing China's ability to project air power to distant locations.
J-16 fighter jets led the exercise, replacing the J-10C fighters that participated in the previous year's drill. During the exercise, experimental air combat and combat-like training were conducted, including the first-ever confrontation between French Rafale aircraft and Chinese J-16 fighters.
Analysts See Strategic and Commercial Intent
Sami Orfali, CEO of Defense Arabia, stated: 'From Beijing's perspective, the purpose is not just training, but demonstrating the ability to reach distant locations beyond China's territory, and it can also be interpreted as a marketing message sent to future customers in the region.'
Gen. Samir Farag, former Deputy Director of Military Intelligence and Operations, believes Egypt could become a 'future customer' and stated: 'It could happen that in the future Egypt may want to purchase Chinese fighter jets, therefore it is very important to test the aircraft there, for our pilots to handle and compare with the aircraft we previously had.'
Egypt Seeks to Diversify Arms Sources
Reports indicate Egypt is interested in purchasing additional weapons from China, diversifying its arms sources after years of relying on a single supplier. Egypt's negotiations with the US regarding the purchase of 46 F-15 aircraft have stalled for years without final approval, with Washington not yet formally submitting the deal to Congress.
Reports indicate Egypt is purchasing 10 unmanned combat aircraft of the WJ-700 Falcon type, capable of carrying missiles and conducting long-range combat and reconnaissance missions, valued at $400 million, plus Chinese submarines of the 039A type and the RAAD 300 air defense system. These deals remain at the level of media reports, as there is no official confirmation from either Egypt or China.
