The succession committee named his cousin Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a television news anchor, yet the king's sister and mother insist his will names an unknown son as heir. The King's Death and the Hidden Heir
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who became the world's youngest reigning monarch at age three in 1995, passed away on 27 August 2026 in the US while undergoing cancer treatment. He was unmarried and had no known children before his death, making his succession a matter of legal and traditional significance. The Tooro kingdom's prime minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, publicly revealed the existence of a son in a social media post on the same day, stating that the boy's identity would be formally disclosed later in accordance with Tooro customs.
Oyo's sister, Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale, confirmed at a press conference that her brother's will explicitly names a son as his heir, even though the boy's existence was not publicly known until the king's death. The will declares: 'I hereby declare and direct that if, at the date of my death, I am survived by a son lawfully recognised as my biological son, I appoint him as my heir to the throne of the kingdom of Tooro.' Clash Between Committee and Royal Family
The royal clan's succession committee announced on Wednesday that Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a popular news anchor and editor at the public broadcaster UBC, had been chosen as crown prince. Edward is the son of Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and a grandson of the former king George David Rukidi III. However, Oyo's mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa Akiiki, denounced the committee as a 'self-appointed group of clan members' who ignored the will, claiming the royal family had been placed under house arrest with troops deployed around the palace.
Queen Mother Akiiki stated that the family could not leave or receive visitors freely, alleging that royal guards were removed without notice. Meanwhile, committee member Andrew Mwenda, a prominent Ugandan journalist and relative of the family, noted on Thursday that the family had not produced a photo of the purported son and had declined to disclose details about the boy's mother.
