On the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre and the International Organization for Migration signed a $2.6 million agreement to provide transitional shelter and essential aid to crisis-affected families in Yemen's Ma'rib, Ta'iz and Hodeidah governorates.
A Partnership Born of Urgency
IOM Director General Amy Pope and Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court and Supervisor General of KSrelief, formalised the deal amid a sharp escalation in hostilities that has displaced more than 134,000 people since early September 2026. The agreement is designed to improve living conditions for internally displaced people and vulnerable host communities across the country.
Years of conflict and economic deterioration have already forced more than five million people to leave their homes, leaving many in inadequate shelter conditions and increasingly exposed to environmental hazards that continue to damage shelters and essential infrastructure.
Shelter, Safety and Dignity for 1,900 Families
Over the next 18 months, the project will directly support 1,900 crisis-affected families with transitional shelters, essential household items and emergency shelter solutions. The shelters are designed to better withstand recurrent flooding, extreme weather and other hazards, while reducing overcrowding and protection risks.
The intervention will improve privacy, safety and dignity for displaced families and host communities, with particular attention to women, girls, older people, persons with disabilities and female-headed households. IOM will implement the project in coordination with local authorities and humanitarian partners, prioritising households with the greatest needs.
A Broader Record of Saudi Arabia-IOM Cooperation
IOM's partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has contributed over $140 million in humanitarian and recovery programming across multiple crises. In Yemen, this support has helped expand access to water and sanitation services, strengthen protection assistance, rehabilitate necessary infrastructure and provide emergency shelter and essential non-food items.
"Families displaced by conflict in Yemen need a safe place to live, with privacy and protection from harsh weather. As renewed fighting forces more people from their homes, those needs are becoming more urgent. Our partnership with KSrelief will help families find safer shelter and regain some stability in their daily lives," said Amy Pope.
