Activists Begin Hunger Strike Amid Growing Outcry
The four activists were arrested in March and accused of misusing funds raised for the Global Sumud Flotilla, which sailed to Gaza in 2025 to deliver humanitarian aid. The Global Sumud Flotilla has condemned the arrests and called for their release, describing the detainees' health as deteriorating fast after they began a hunger strike to protest their imprisonment.
The flotilla, which describes its actions as a non-violent response to the crisis in Gaza, had previously been intercepted by Israel before reaching its destination last year. Before that, it was anchored in Tunisia's Sidi Bou Said port when it was attacked by two drones, according to available reports.
Rights Groups Label Case as Politically Motivated
Bassem Trifi, head of the Tunisian League for Human Rights, said the case is politically motivated and the activists are prisoners of conscience. He added that the movement in support of Palestinian rights brought together a huge number of people and generated significant popular support, but today there are attempts to reduce the issue to a simple matter of fund mismanagement.
Ghassen Bouazi, an advocate for the activists' release, said their arrest was part of a broader campaign targeting political figures, rights advocates and journalists. He noted that some of the reasons behind their arrest were pressures from abroad, without providing further details on the alleged external interference.
Flotilla Condemns Tunisia's Shift on Palestinian Solidarity
