A Tigray People's Liberation Front official told AFP on Sunday that seven Ethiopian armed groups have formed a coalition aimed at removing the federal government and establishing a transitional administration.
Alliance Announced and Led by Fano Militia
TPLF vice president Amanuel Assefa confirmed the formation of the alliance, stating that the groups have been in dialogue for over a year and believe they will succeed in their objectives. The coalition includes Tigrayan forces, Amhara nationalist Fano militias, and the Oromo Liberation Army, alongside four other groups. Fano leader Zemene Kasse will chair the alliance.
The stated goals are to remove the current regime and facilitate a transitional government. Amanuel Assefa said, 'We just formed an alliance, we are collaborating with several groups and our objectives are to remove the regime and facilitating a transitional government.' He added, 'We think we will be successful, we have been talking with each other for more than a year.' Fano leader Zemene Kasse will chair the alliance.
Fears of Renewed Conflict Mount
The African Union reported that both the federal government and the TPLF have massed troops along the northern border in recent months, raising fears of a return to the war that killed approximately 600,000 people. The alliance's announcement has intensified concerns about a potential escalation of violence across multiple regions.
Federal authorities have not yet responded to AFP's request for comment on the alliance. The grouping of former adversaries, including the Fano militias who fought alongside federal forces during the Tigray war, adds complexity to the situation and raises questions about the sustainability of such a coalition.
Analysts Question Alliance Viability
Kjetil Tronvoll, a regional specialist at Oslo New University College in Norway, described the alliance's effort as 'a sacrificial war for the rebels' and expressed doubt about their ability to sustain such a conflict. He noted that the federal government possesses numerous drones and could present a significant challenge.
Tronvoll added that if the groups coordinate as a military command, it could create a potential four to five fronts for the government to deal with. However, he questioned what might come after any takeover, given the armed groups' different ideologies and past conflicts, including territorial disputes over Western Tigray.
