Seven armed groups across Ethiopia have announced a formal alliance called the Alliance for Survival, pledging to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government in Addis Ababa and accusing it of presiding over war, genocide, mass destruction and utter poverty.
A Broad Coalition Emerges
The Alliance for Survival brings together the Fano militia in Amhara, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and four other smaller groupings, covering six of Ethiopia's 12 regional states. The seven groups accuse the government of presiding over war, genocide, mass destruction and utter poverty, claiming the country is at risk of disintegration.
The alliance includes groups from Oromia, Amhara, Tigray, Ogaden, Afar and Benishangul-Gumuz, making up half of Ethiopia's 12 regional states. The announcement comes months after reports of an alleged alliance between the TPLF and neighbouring Eritrea, adding further complexity to the country's security landscape.
A History of Conflict and Division
Ethiopia has faced years of armed conflict in Oromia and Amhara, the most populous states in the country. There have also been renewed tensions in the northern Tigray region, where a two-year civil war left hundreds of thousands dead and displaced millions before an African-Union peace deal ended the conflict in 2022.
Amhara's Fano group fought alongside federal forces during the Tigray war but turned against the federal government in an armed insurgency less than a year after the war ended, after refusing government orders to disarm. The government has been fighting the OLA since 2018, and the new alliance marks a significant escalation in the country's internal security challenges.
Government Response and Electoral Context
Abiy responded by saying he had faith in Ethiopia's defensive capabilities and told lawmakers in July: Even if others were added, we do not have an iota of fear regarding Ethiopia's sovereignty. The country held a general election in June, with Abiy's Prosperity Party retaining its overwhelming parliamentary majority, despite the poll being overshadowed by conflict and accusations of repression.
The Fano and OLA rebel groups rejected the election and its results, while the Tigray region and its six million inhabitants were completely excluded from the poll. Federal authorities have not yet responded to the formal announcement of the Alliance for Survival, leaving the political and military situation in Ethiopia uncertain.
