Dozens of Sudanese refugees walked roughly 20 kilometres through heavy rain and strong winds from Marra refugee camp to the town of Amliouna in eastern Chad to demand urgent humanitarian assistance, while a separate storm damaged shelters at Mile camp near Guéréda on Monday afternoon.
Refugees March for Assistance Amid Harsh Conditions
Refugees who arrived at Mile camp five to eight months ago say they have received neither food nor cash assistance for about four months. The group left the camp on foot despite the severe weather, covering approximately 20 kilometres to reach Amliouna in their quest for aid.
One refugee told Radio Dabanga that the group is now heading to the National Commission for Refugee Reception and Registration to lodge a formal complaint and call for solutions to their plight.
Storm Destroys Shelters at Mile Refugee Camp
Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds hit Mile refugee camp on Monday afternoon, damaging a number of shelters and injuring some people. Refugee Ishaq Adam told Radio Dabanga that the storm destroyed a large number of tents and swept away everything inside them.
Adam says the storm was the second to hit the camp during August, leaving large numbers of refugees, including children and elderly people, without shelter. He appeals to humanitarian organisations to urgently provide assistance, including food, drinking water, medicines, and medical supplies, as well as shelter materials and tents.
Historical Precedent of Refugee Marches in Chad
The move follows a similar action by refugees from Kaga refugee camp in eastern Chad last year, when they walked 55 kilometres to Farchana to demand better conditions. The current refugees are calling on the authorities concerned to ensure that food or cash assistance is delivered regularly.
This pattern of walking long distances to demand aid highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad, where infrastructure and support systems remain inadequate to meet their basic needs.
