The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that 129,438 people, or 21,573 households, have been displaced across seven governorates in Yemen as families flee escalating insecurity. The figure rose sharply in just three days, underscoring the accelerating humanitarian crisis.
Rapid Surge in Displacement Numbers
On 18 September, IOM recorded 118,086 displaced people. By 21 September, the figure had climbed by 11,352, reaching 129,438. Othman Belbeisi, IOM Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said the numbers keep climbing as families are forced from their homes in just a few weeks.
Many displaced families have already moved more than once to find safety. Belbeisi noted that these are families who have lost their homes and their income, arriving in towns that were already struggling to cope with the influx.
Ta'iz and Lahj Bear the Brunt of the Crisis
Ta'iz Governorate hosts the most displaced people, with 73,494, followed by Lahj with 33,828. Within Ta'iz, Jabal Habashi is hosting over 23,000 displaced people, while Al Ma'afer has more than 16,500. In Lahj, Al Madaribah Wa Al Aarah hosts nearly 21,500.
Other governorates receiving new arrivals include Aden with 8,946, Al Hodeidah with 8,244, Abyan with 3,324, Hadramawt with 1,008, and Ma'rib with 594. Over 12,300 people have also sought safety in Ash Shamayatayn.
Cross-Border Movement and Urgent Appeal
As of 20 September, 3,106 people had crossed the Red Sea from Yemen to Djibouti. IOM is providing urgent assistance to many of them and is appealing for greater international support to manage the humanitarian response.
Belbeisi warned that host communities are sharing the little they have but cannot do it alone. He called for immediate support for both the people who have fled and those who are taking them in.
