A Festival That Powers the Local Economy
The Red CentreNATS has become a cornerstone of Alice Springs' cultural calendar, now in its 12th year and attracting roughly 700 registered participants this year. More than half of those entrants have travelled from other states, injecting an estimated $5 million into the town's economy each year.
The four-day event offers a packed programme of street cruising, show-and-shine displays, drag races, burnout competitions and a town-stopping street parade. Spectators of all ages lined the streets, sitting on ute backs, deckchairs and car roof-racks to watch the action unfold.
Family Heirlooms and Interstate Travellers
Among the entrants were the Taylors, who drove from South Australia to compete. Ben Taylor, owner of a classic Ford Falcon XC 393 Stroker, sat in the passenger seat as his daughter Montana lined up for a drag race. 'I love it so much, I'm so glad I get to come and experience this,' Montana said with a grin.
Local favourite Paul Totani brought his 1984 Holden Kingswood ute to the dragway, a vehicle his family has kept since the 1960s. 'It's a family heirloom. It will go to the kids later on, but we get it out once a year for Red CentreNATS,' Totani explained. The licensed aircraft engineer and pilot swapped the sky for the dirt track, dust flying.
A Town United by the Rumble
The street parade was the highlight for many locals, with hundreds of cars rolling around the town's largest roundabout at the base of the MacDonnell Ranges. Alice Springs turned out in force, with families gathering to celebrate the occasion under the afternoon sun.
Lisa Morgan, a long-time volunteer for the Red CentreNATS, summed up the spirit of the event: 'Everyone bands together for the excitement, and the rumbles.' For residents like Morgan, festivals such as this one help Alice Springs shine on the national stage.
