President William Ruto has told Kajiado residents that Amboseli National Park will be fully under county management before the end of 2026, despite a court order that has temporarily halted the transfer announced in November 2025.
Amboseli Transfer and Equity Push
President Ruto, speaking during a development tour in Kajiado County, said the park will be fully in the hands of Kajiado County before the end of this year. He acknowledged that the transfer has been temporarily halted by the court but warned those opposing the move that they will face a rude shock.
He noted that opponents had taken the government to court over the Social Health Authority and the Affordable Housing Programme, yet those programmes are progressing well. Ruto said the securitisation of the Road Maintenance Levy Fund and the Sports Fund has advanced equity and will not be stalled by litigation.
Infrastructure and Development Projects
The President inspected the 67km Illasit-Rombo-Chala-Njukini-Taveta road, which is 48 per cent completed and will cut travel time between Kajiado and Taita-Taveta counties from two hours to just 40 minutes. He also announced eight new roads of 220km under construction across Kajiado at a cost of Sh13 billion.
Other projects commissioned during the tour include the Sh221 million Rombo Clusters Irrigation Development Project, the Sh2.2 billion Loitoktok Affordable Housing Project, and the Sh220 million Loitoktok Kenya Medical Training College student hostels with a 580-bed capacity. At Kimana, he commissioned the Sh2.7 billion Sultan Hamud-Loitoktok 132kV Transmission Line and Loitoktok Sub-Station.
Tata Chemicals Closure and Soda Ash Operations
President Ruto ordered the closure of Tata Chemicals, saying the government will identify a new investor to take over soda ash mining operations at Lake Magadi. He said the company had failed to modernise the plant, create sufficient employment, or deliver meaningful economic benefits to Kenyans over more than 100 years.
The Ministry of Mining suspended Tata Chemicals' mining operations in July 2026 over concerns relating to regulatory compliance, value addition and licensing. The company has also been unable to reach an agreement with Kajiado County over a land rates dispute following the expiry of its operating licence in 2023.
