Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa told the United Nations General Assembly that Israel's repeated military incursions into internationally recognised Syrian territory are undermining the country's fragile post-war recovery and must end immediately.
Rejecting Israeli Aggression
Al-Sharaa, who came to power in 2024 after toppling Bashar al-Assad's regime, delivered a sharp rebuke of Israel's military actions during his second address to the UN General Assembly. He stated that Israel has carried out 500 air strikes, more than 1,200 incursions and 300 detentions in Syria, describing the situation as reminiscent of an era that was thought to be long gone.
The president said, 'We reject Israeli attempts to impose a fait accompli. We reject their aggressions, which undermine peace and security.' He added that these actions are reminiscent of an era that was thought to be long gone, warning that they threaten the stability Syria has worked to rebuild since the civil war.
Recovery and Refugee Returns
Al-Sharaa highlighted Syria's progress, noting that the bloodshed and destruction have been halted and that the country has begun a journey of reconstruction and recovery. He pointed to the safe and decent return of approximately 3.5 million refugees and displaced people, a milestone achieved after years of conflict that strained neighbouring countries and fuelled persistent hostility towards migrants in some Western nations.
The president also cited state control over arms, the lifting of international sanctions and the rebuilding of military and civilian institutions as key achievements. He framed Syria's emergence from crisis as an opportunity, emphasising the nation's determination to move forward despite ongoing external threats.
Golan Heights and International Commitments
Al-Sharaa insisted that the strategically important and water-rich Golan Heights will remain Syrian territory, even after Colombia recognised Israel's claim of sovereignty over the area last month. He urged the international community to commit to a 1974 agreement that established a UN-supervised separation zone between Israeli and Syrian forces, demanding Israel's withdrawal from the occupied region.
In July, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated that the Golan Heights is Syrian territory, describing Israel's occupation as totally unacceptable during his first visit to Damascus since 2009. Al-Sharaa's speech, lasting about 10 minutes, reinforced Syria's stance that the area will remain Syrian territory regardless of external diplomatic developments.
