A bitter succession dispute has erupted in Uganda's Tooro Kingdom days before the burial of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died at 34 while undergoing cancer treatment in the United States. Royal clan elders named Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a 56-year-old TV news presenter, as the next monarch, but the late king's family has rejected the decision, insisting he left a will naming his young son as heir.

At a press conference in Fort Portal, the kingdom's succession committee announced Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next Omukama, citing due diligence and consultation among its 19-member panel. Kijanangoma, the son of Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and grandson of former king George David Rukidi III, is a cousin of the late king and a news presenter at the state broadcaster UBC.
Another contender, Prince George Desmond Kamurasi, a footballer for the South East Dons in the UK, had been considered but declined the throne, citing other responsibilities. The committee said the enthronement would follow Tooro traditions, though no date has been set.
Family Rejects Decision and Accuses Clan of Turmoil
Princess Ruth Komuntale, the late king's sister, said Oyo had left strict instructions naming his son as first in line, a position backed by senior royal Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya. She accused the clan of creating confusion and turmoil while the family was still grieving, insisting the written will from 2022 must be respected.
Clan representatives countered that reports of a son were insufficient because the child had not been formally presented to the royal clan as required by Tooro tradition. One committee member told NTV that a royal child must undergo formal introduction and ceremonial preparations before being considered for leadership.
Palace Under 'House Arrest' as Funeral Approaches
Queen Best Kemigisa, the late king's mother, said royal guards have been withdrawn and soldiers deployed, restricting the family's movement and ability to receive visitors. She described the situation as house arrest and appealed to the army and President Yoweri Museveni to allow the family to mourn and bury Oyo in peace on Saturday.
Thousands of mourners are expected at the burial at the royal tombs near the palace in Fort Portal. The body was returned to Uganda from the US on Friday, and preparations for the funeral are underway. Culture Minister Henry Tumukunde has stepped in to oversee mediation, with an outcome expected after consultations with Museveni and cultural leaders.
