The World Economic Forum's 21st Global Risks Report, published on January 14, 2026, warns that the world is entering an era of escalating conflict, fragmentation, and declining international cooperation. Based on responses from over 1,300 experts, the report identifies five critical risks set to dominate through 2028, with significant implications for Africa.
Economic Turmoil and Africa's Mineral Vulnerability
Economic challenges have surged to the top of the global risk list for 2026 and the next two years, rising from eighth place the previous year. The report highlights a growing reliance on trade protection measures, including tariffs, investment restrictions, and sanctions, alongside a sharp decline in WTO dispute cases by nearly two-thirds since 2019.
Africa faces particular exposure to two economic threats: competition for critical minerals and digital currency risks. Governments are increasingly stockpiling minerals needed for clean energy transitions, which could bring economic, diplomatic, and even military pressure on resource-rich African nations. Meanwhile, the number of digital currencies pegged to foreign currencies is expected to reach $1.22 trillion by 2028, up from $173 billion in 2025, threatening African central banks' monetary sovereignty.
Disinformation and Social Polarisation Threaten Stability
Disinformation and manipulation of public opinion rank as the second biggest global risk for the next two years, having previously been the fourth. The report notes that it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish real information from AI-generated content, including deepfakes, as trust in media and institutions continues to erode.
In Africa, 73% of respondents expressed concern about distinguishing truth from lies online, matching the US figure and exceeding the global average of 58%. Social media algorithms that reinforce existing views are fueling echo chambers, while growing social polarisation is expected to become the third biggest risk by 2028, making it harder for African countries to reach consensus on critical national issues.
Climate Extremes and Rising Armed Conflict
Extreme weather conditions are the fourth biggest risk by 2028 but the top risk over the next decade, signalling the WEF's view that climate change is the world's greatest long-term threat. Events continue to damage critical infrastructure in water supply, energy, and transport, with countries like Morocco, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria facing risks to solar and other energy installations due to prolonged drought.
Armed conflict between countries remains one of the biggest risks for the next two years, dropping one place from first to second. The report emphasises that a decline in ranking does not mean the risk has decreased. Africa is directly linked to global competition for valuable natural resources, with major powers increasingly involved in areas rich in minerals needed for economic and energy strategies, directly affecting conflict-prone regions.
