A Cairo court has sentenced Egyptian television presenter Sarah Khalifa and 11 others to death by hanging for manufacturing and trafficking narcotics in a sprawling criminal operation that involved more than 750 kilograms of seized drugs and two apartments used as laboratories.
The Verdict and Charges
Sarah Khalifa, 39, was convicted alongside 11 co-defendants of forming an organised criminal gang specialising in procuring materials used in manufacturing narcotics, with the intent to traffic them. The court also found the group possessed unlicensed firearms and ammunition alongside the narcotics.
Authorities seized more than 750 kilograms of narcotics and raw materials during the investigation. Two apartments were discovered being used as laboratories for drug manufacturing, while prosecutors said the gang imported raw materials from abroad to produce synthetic drugs and stored them in residential properties.
Khalifa's Background and Denial
Khalifa is best known as the host of the security and crime programme Mission Impossible, which aired on the private Al-Mehwar TV channel. She also owns a plastic surgery clinic and an event planning company, and maintains over 2.5 million followers on Instagram.
During the court session, Khalifa denied the charges, declaring her innocence and weeping as she asked the court for mercy. She told investigators she had never smoked a cigarette in her life and pleaded with the judge to listen to her, saying her parents raised her well and she did not need drug money.
Appeal and Broader Context
The verdict, which came after the court consulted the Grand Mufti of Egypt for his religious opinion as required by law in capital cases, is subject to appeal before the Court of Cassation. Khalifa was arrested in April 2025 as part of the investigation, and the case involved 28 defendants in total.
In a separate case on the same day, the court sentenced Khalifa to three years in prison for assaulting and filming her driver. In another separate case, she was also sentenced to five years in prison over the kidnapping and assault of a young man.
