Kenya Airways has named Habil Waswani, its Company Secretary, as acting CEO after Captain George Kamal stepped down for personal reasons, with the transition set to begin on September 15.
Kamal's Departure and Transition Timeline
Captain George Kamal resigned from Kenya Airways for personal reasons after more than a year in executive leadership, having previously served as COO for three years before ascending to the CEO role. The Board expressed gratitude for his commitment, dedication, and expertise in stabilising the airline's operations during his tenure.
Kamal will remain with the airline for a 30-day transition period before his formal exit on September 30, 2026. During this interim, he will continue to support the organisation as the new leadership takes over.
Waswani's Appointment and Qualifications
Habil Waswani, currently the Company Secretary and Director of Legal Services and Regulatory Compliance, will assume the acting CEO role on September 15. He brings more than 24 years of experience in corporate and commercial law and has worked at Kenya Airways for over five years, where he has overseen aviation-related legal matters and commercial law.
The Board described Waswani as an experienced corporate governance practitioner with prior experience in the banking and insurance sectors. They stated they fully support his appointment as he takes over the organisation's executive leadership during this interim period.
Future Leadership and Turnaround Strategy
The Board has begun the process of competitively recruiting a substantive Group Managing Director and CEO, with the exercise expected to be completed in the near term. Kenya Airways remains focused on its ongoing turnaround strategy, which includes improving operational reliability, returning to sustainable positive financial performance, and achieving growth ambitions.
The Board and management expressed their gratitude to Capt. Kamal for his diligence, service, leadership, and dedication to the Airline over the years. Shareholders have also fully supported the airline's turnaround strategy as it moves forward.
