Uganda's ancient kingdom of Tooro is embroiled in a bitter succession dispute after the family of the late King Oyo Nyimba, also known as Rukidi IV, rejected a successor named by the royal clan's committee on Thursday, citing a will that names his son as heir.
A Reign That Began at Three
Oyo Nyimba ascended the throne in 1995 at the age of three, becoming the world's youngest monarch after his father's death. His reign was managed by a series of relatives serving as regents until he reached adulthood in 2010. He died on August 27 at the age of 34 while receiving cancer treatment in the United States.
His ascension celebrations were attended by then-President Yoweri Museveni, underscoring the political weight of the kingdom. Despite Uganda being a republic, Tooro retains significant social influence as a custodian of tradition, and its leaders continue to command respect across the region.
Competing Claims to the Throne
On Wednesday, the royal clan's succession committee named Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a cousin of the late king and a television anchor at public broadcaster UBC, as the next monarch. However, Oyo's mother, Queen Kemigisa, and his sister announced on Thursday that they rejected the proposal, asserting that the king had left a will designating his son as successor.
Queen Kemigisa branded the committee a 'self-appointed group of clan members' who acted despite knowing the contents of the will. She further accused the Ugandan military of placing her family under house arrest, adding a layer of political tension to the dynastic dispute.
Mystery Surrounds the Named Heir
The identity of Oyo's son and his mother remains unknown. The late king, a campaigner for HIV/AIDS prevention and environmental causes, had not publicly acknowledged a son until Tooro's Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki revealed the boy's existence after the king's death.
Journalist and relative Andrew Mwenda raised doubts on social media, noting that tradition requires a son to be born to a queen to succeed, and that the family had not even produced a photograph of the child. Prime Minister Armstrong urged both sides to remain calm, calling for a credible process while the king awaits burial.
