Wolves imported to South Africa by the apartheid government in the 1970s and 1980s for military use have become living relics of that era, now sheltered by private sanctuaries that cannot release them into the wild because they were hand-raised by humans.
A Military Experiment in Wolf-Dog Hybridisation
The apartheid government sought to create a creature combining the trainability of a German Shepherd with the physical endurance of a wolf, including stamina, powerful bite, and the ability to operate in harsh desert terrain during border wars in Namibia and Angola.
Once the military project disappeared, there was no obvious institutional role for these animals, and some ended up in private hands, the exotic animal trade, or sanctuaries as living remnants of an old military experiment.
Sanctuaries Struggle to Care for the Unwanted Animals
The All Hearts Wolf and Animal Foundation in Hartbeespoort near Pretoria cares for approximately 60 wolves and about 67 wolf-dog hybrids, consuming between 4.5 to 6 tonnes of chicken and two to three cows per month to sustain their diet.
The sanctuary offers the five freedoms to the wolves, including swimming pools, meat hanging in trees, and vast enclosure spaces for digging dens, though the owners acknowledge that nothing will ever truly mimic the wild.
A National Legacy of Unwanted Relics
The Tsitsikamma Wolf Sanctuary on South Africa's south coast has operated for 25 years and has saved more than 500 wolves and wolf dogs, highlighting the scale of the problem across the country.
Experts note that the wolves imported to serve the machinery of apartheid security have become the unwanted relics of that system, with no viable option for release into the wild.
