Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the world's youngest reigning traditional monarch, has died at the age of 34, his prime minister announced on Friday. He ascended the throne of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda in 1995 at just three years old, becoming the 13th ruler of a kingdom founded in the early 19th century.
A Life of Regency and Royal Duty
King Oyo ruled over more than two million people and was listed by Guinness World Records as the youngest reigning monarch globally. When he became king in 1995, a regency including the queen mother was established until he turned 18 for his official coronation. He was not officially married, but his prime minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, confirmed that the continuity of the Crown is assured.
Akiiki said His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom. The cause of King Oyo's death was not disclosed by the Tooro kingdom, though a Ugandan government minister was quoted in local media saying he had been critically ill and was seeking treatment in the US.
A Legacy of Service and Compassion
The young king was well respected by his people and promoted causes such as youth empowerment, education, climate conservation, and HIV/AIDS awareness. Government minister Margaret Muhanga described the mood in the kingdom as sombre, saying you can't see anyone smiling, and announced plans to plant a million trees in his honour during the mourning period.
Ugandan musician Juliana Kanyomozi called it a very dark day for Tooro, while pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine called for King Oyo's soul to rest in eternal peace. The Federation of Uganda Football Associations honoured him as a true friend of the beautiful game and announced a moment of silence before all matches until 4 September in memory of his legacy, love, passion and contribution to the sport.
National Mourning Across Uganda's Kingdoms
Tooro's Prime Minister Akiiki called King Oyo's passing an immeasurable loss to the royal family and the people of Tooro, urging all citizens to remain united, calm and prayerful during this profoundly difficult time. He added that May His Majesty the King rest in eternal peace, reflecting the deep respect held for the late monarch across the nation.
The Buganda Kingdom, Uganda's largest and most influential traditional institution, said it mourned with the people of Tooro, labelling him a valuable figure to Uganda. Similarly, the Rwenzururu Kingdom extended its condolences to all those mourning this great loss, underscoring the widespread grief felt across the country.
