A Life Defined by Youth and Global Advocacy
Oyo, who ascended to the throne at just three years old in 1995, became the world's youngest monarch and a global symbol of youthful leadership. He died last month at the age of 34 in the United States, where he was undergoing cancer treatment.
Beyond his ceremonial duties, Oyo cultivated international ties and became a UN goodwill ambassador for the fight against HIV and AIDS. His sister Ruth Komuntale remembered him as a man who never lost the boy who loved to have fun despite the weight of his responsibilities.
A Fractious Succession Resolved by State Intervention
The late king's immediate family insisted his unknown son should succeed him, as stipulated in his will. However, supporters of Kijanangoma argued that the family had failed to provide basic information about the purported heir, prompting Ugandan authorities to intervene and push through the cousin's succession.
At the Karambi Royal Tombs, Kijanangoma cast nine coffee berries into the grave, a traditional ritual marking the formal transfer of power. The 56-year-old, described by colleagues as quiet and humble, will inherit a substantial royal estate including land and government cash payouts.
Unity Called as the Kingdom Mourns
The burial, held 31 years after Oyo's coronation, drew thousands of mourners to Fort Portal as royal guards in orange shawls escorted the casket to the tombs. The archbishop of the Church of Uganda urged the community to avoid divisive rhetoric during the grieving process.
Oyo's reign was marked by close ties with former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who served as a special adviser and funded palace refurbishments. The new king now steps into a role that blends traditional heritage with modern governance in a country that retains pre-colonial kingdoms.
