Saltwater has pushed approximately eight kilometres inland along Tanzania's Pangani River, devastating coconut farms, displacing fish stocks and forcing residents to confront a future where their ancestral lands are increasingly claimed by mangroves and the ocean.
Coconut Harvests Collapse as Salt Intrudes
Buga Steven, a farmer in Pangani, reports that coconut harvests have dropped to less than a third of the previous yield of about 5,000 coconuts. The trunks were much thicker and healthier, but rising sea levels have affected them. Salt has moved far inland, productivity has dropped, the trees are unhealthy, and many are dying. Our income has also fallen.
Haroub Selemani reports that large coconuts now come from higher ground, specifically from places like Mafisi or Mseko, rather than from Matakani to Jasini. For those of us living from Matakani to Jasini, we no longer have proper coconuts. If you want large coconuts, you have to go to places like Mafisi or Mseko and further uphill. That is where coconuts still grow large.
Fishermen Lose Traditional Knowledge as Species Migrate
Ali Hamis Daudi reports that fish have moved and that fishermen can no longer rely on traditional knowledge about where fish species congregate. If you come late, you may not find a place to anchor your boat. In the past, we knew exactly what depth of water certain fish species preferred. Now the fish have moved.
Clara Makenya, UNEP's representative in Tanzania, states that saltwater can accelerate the deterioration of equipment and make water unsuitable for ordinary household uses. When saltwater enters inland areas and affects agriculture, it ultimately impacts food security as a whole.
Global Sea Level Rise Accelerates and Communities Demand Action
Nearly 770 million people, roughly one in 10 people on Earth, live in coastal areas less than five metres above the high-tide line. Global mean sea level rose by an average of 4.7 millimetres a year between 2014 and 2023. In 2024, the annual increase in global mean sea level reached a record 5.9mm.
Iddi Hashimu Iddi states that the government should compensate all affected residents and allow them to leave the areas. The most important thing is for the government to compensate all of us who have been affected. Give us compensation and allow us to leave these areas behind.
