U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty filed an emergency motion Thursday night asking a federal judge to halt the Kennedy Center board's plan to reattach President Trump's name to the arts complex and rename its grounds.
Emergency Motion Filed Against Board's Renaming Plan
Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, submitted an emergency request to U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper asking the court to stop the Kennedy Center trustees from placing President Trump's name back on the building's facade. The motion also seeks to block the board's proposal to rename the physical grounds of the center 'President Donald J. Trump Plaza.'
Beatty, who serves as an ex-officio member of the Kennedy Center board, filed the lawsuit against the board and Trump as chairman last December. Her legal team told Judge Cooper that the board's actions constitute 'a breathtaking act of defiance' and that only Congress has the authority to alter the center's name.
Proposed Signage and Board's August Vote
The board approved its latest renaming plans in a meeting on Aug. 13. The proposed signage would read: 'The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump, Endowed by the Trump Kennedy Center Fund.' The final line would only appear if the fund reaches $100 million in donations.
If the plan moves forward in full, Trump's name would appear on the entryway sign twice and on a third location on the grounds. Beatty's lawyers described the September 8 deadline set by the center as 'arbitrary' and urged the court to take immediate action.
Previous Court Ruling and Legal Arguments
In May, Judge Cooper ruled that the board's earlier attempt to rename the institution the 'Trump-Kennedy Center' was unlawful. He wrote that the center's organic statute makes it clear that the institution is to be named for President Kennedy and that only Congress can change it.
Beatty said the board's repeated efforts to break the law are 'a breathtaking act of defiance,' but she will continue to stand up against unlawful acts. She added that the Kennedy Center is a 'sacred space that belongs to the American people' and that the board has 'flouted court orders' at every turn.
