Earthquake Impact and Casualties
Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela's north-central region on 24 June at 18:00 local time, with the first registering magnitude 7.2 along the San Felipe–Yumare–Montalbán corridor in Yaracuy and Carabobo states, while the second, magnitude 7.5, hit 17 kilometers west of Catia La Mar off the coast of La Guaira State.
As of 24 August, authorities reported 6,509 deaths resulting from the earthquakes, with 60,785 housing units assessed and 11,001 classified as high risk, underscoring the severe infrastructure damage across the seven affected states including La Guaira, Distrito Capital, Miranda, Carabobo, Aragua, Falcón, and Yaracuy.
Humanitarian Response and Funding
As of 22 September, the humanitarian response had mobilized US$490.7 million, with US$402.2 million (43.2%) allocated to the 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP), which originally aimed to assist 5.5 million people before the earthquakes expanded its scope to reach 6.2 million people requiring US$931 million.
Between January and August 2026, the response reached 1,901,213 people, of whom 1,463,890 received assistance under the HRP and 437,323 through the earthquake response, with approximately 59% of beneficiaries being women and girls.
Post-Disaster Needs Assessment
Presented on 15 September, the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) estimated US$21 billion in recovery and reconstruction needs, with US$14.831 billion in damages and losses across the seven affected states, serving as a basis for identifying priorities and coordinating recovery efforts.
The assessment was led by Venezuelan authorities with support from the European Union and the World Bank, alongside technical assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and CAF-Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.
