American rapper Macklemore has announced his own 'Free Palestine' concert tour after being dropped as the opening act for Ed Sheeran's US tour following pro-Palestinian remarks made during a performance in New Jersey earlier this month.
New Tour Announced with International Dates
Macklemore revealed on Instagram that the tour will kick off next month with shows in Dublin, Paris and London, with all proceeds donated to organisations supporting the Palestinian people. US dates and additional performers are expected to be announced later.
The Grammy-winning artist said he wanted to headline the tour so he could stand in stadiums and say two words near and dear to his heart: 'Free Palestine.' He added that the decision to drop him came from stadium owners who objected to his remarks.
Macklemore Defends Political Stance on Stage
Speaking on Thursday, Macklemore said, 'Being apolitical during a genocide doesn't work anymore.' He argued that people are asking artists to use their platforms for more than entertainment and to push back when calls for a free Palestine are met with attempts to silence them.
He noted that something has shifted over the last three years, describing a collective awakening around Palestinian liberation and the power of billionaires trying to censor that call. He said what happened to him is bigger than one artist or one stage.
Ed Sheeran Distances Himself from Decision
Ed Sheeran said the decision to drop Macklemore came from tour organisers, not him personally, and that he tried to find a resolution. He apologised for his handling of the situation at a Philadelphia performance and described Israel's treatment of Gaza residents as 'unjustifiable.'
Israeli officials have strongly denied their actions in Gaza amount to genocide, despite a UN inquiry deeming so, and say they are justified as self-defence. Macklemore has been an outspoken critic of Israel's assault on Gaza and its occupation of the West Bank.
