Schools in Novosibirsk received a state-approved textbook this year that urges children to prepare to die for their country, equates homosexuality with pedophilia and frames the war in Ukraine as a blessing. The material, distributed under the guise of patriotism lessons introduced in 2022, is not on the national core curriculum list but reflects the Kremlin's intent to spread propaganda in classrooms.
Content of the Textbook
The textbook, described as providing materials for spiritual, moral and patriotic upbringing, repeatedly states that dying for one's country is a blessing. One author writes that love always involves sacrifice and that the sacrifice of a defender of the homeland is their life. The book also claims children are mentally crippled by computer games, Hollywood films and Disney cartoons, while portraying Russia as superior to Western nations.
Europeans are labelled thieves, murderers and liars, and colonial empires are said to have legitimised murder, lies and plunder. Russia is described as never exploiting its peoples but merely improving their living conditions. The text makes no mention of Indigenous cultures or religions other than Christianity and Slavic paganism, and gives instructions on how women should use their charms.
Students React to Propaganda
Ilya, a 16-year-old student in Novosibirsk, said the idea of dying for his country is anathema and that it actually means dying for the president's interests and ambitions. He began watching videos of Alexei Navalny and later opposed the government after authorities blocked access to YouTube and Discord, setting up a VPN to access independent media.
Alexei, another 16-year-old student, said many classmates avoid patriotic events and that blocking YouTube sparked his interest in politics. He realised the authorities wanted to suppress free speech and get rid of inconvenient citizens. Ilya believes most students do not take the propaganda seriously and that they are very good at being quiet about it.
Broader Patterns of Indoctrination
Beyond the textbook, patriotism has become an integral part of the curriculum since 2022, with subjects such as Fundamentals of Homeland Security and Defense added alongside weekly Conversations about Important Things. People who have taken part in the war in Ukraine are invited to lessons on students' future and career choices, while a student was reprimanded for wearing a sweater with an English slogan.
Dima Zicer, an educator who moved to Estonia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, said many students are happy to be part of a pro-Putin majority that does not think critically. He noted that parents often only become aware of the situation when their children say things like We'll crush them all or Putin is great. Alexei and Ilya both want to leave Russia after graduating.
