Humanitarian telecoms efforts continue following June 2026 earthquakes as power and connectivity are restored
Twin earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026, damaging communications. The WFP-led Logistics and Telecommunications Cluster Telecoms Area is supporting emergency response communications, though the Cluster is not formally activated for this emergency.
Coordination With National and Partner Entities
The LTC Telecoms team in Venezuela is collaborating with government authorities, mobile network operators, internet service providers, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and other partners. The objective is to restore critical communications and prioritize assistance in the most affected areas.
This coordinated approach ensures that response efforts are aligned across sectors. By engaging both public and private actors, the Telecoms Area seeks to maintain operational links where infrastructure was disrupted by the earthquakes and to support ongoing humanitarian activities in the field.
Power Continuity and Connectivity Monitoring
LTC Telecoms is strengthening power continuity at response sites through real-time monitoring of battery systems tied to solar-powered internet. This gives timely visibility on energy gaps so teams can act to keep connectivity running for over 1,400 humanitarian responders and affected communities.
The monitoring allows corrective action before outages affect services. Maintaining internet access is essential for coordination, and the system helps sustain operations across sites where grid power remains unstable following the June earthquake sequence.
Community Charging Kiosks Deployed
Grupo Telefónica has provided a charging kiosk at each of Polideportivo and César Nieves, supporting 48 power-strip connections. Affected people can charge mobile phones and other ICT devices to keep access to communication, information and basic services.
The kiosks will be returned to Grupo Telefónica once the emergency transitions fully into recovery. This temporary deployment expands local connectivity capacity without permanent asset transfer during the current response phase.
