Dhulgariir 7.4 ah oo Colombia ku dhacay ayaa dilay 132 qof
Madaxweynaha cusub wuxuu ku dhawaaqay xaalad musiibo qaran kadib burbur baahsan
Ugu yaraan 132 qof ayaa ku dhintay dhulgariir cabbirkiisu gaarayey 7.4 oo Isniintii ku dhuftay Colombia, kaas oo ka dhacay god qoto-dheer oo 103 kiiloomitir ah. Madaxweynaha Abelardo de la Espriella ayaa ku dhawaaqay xaalad musiibo qaran.
Burburka iyo Dhimashada Magaalooyinka
Dhimashada ugu badan waxaa laga soo sheegay magaalada Pereira ee gobolka caanka ah ee beeraha qaxwada, iyadoo magaalooyinka ku dhow iyo gobolka Valle del Cauca ay sidoo kale saameyn weyn gaareen. Magaalada Cali oo 160 kiiloomitir koonfur ka xigta Pereira ayaa ku dumay 32 dhisme.
Ugu yaraan laba qof ayaa ku dhintay magaalada Manizales. Hay'adda duulista rayidka ee Colombia ayaa sheegtay in waxyeello soo gaartay garoomo ay ku jiraan Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago iyo Buenaventura. Waxaa sidoo kale waxyeelloobeen in ka badan 1,500 guri.
Goobta Dhulgariirka iyo Dareenka Guud
Tuulada San José del Palmar ee gobolka Chocó ayaa ahayd goobta saxda ah ee uu ka dhacay dhulgariirka. Duqa deegaanka León Fabio Marín Moncada ayaa sheegay in aan wax dhimasho ama dhaawac ah looga soo sheegin tuuladaas. Gariirka waxaa laga dareemay Venezuela, Ecuador iyo Panama.
Sida laga soo xigtay USGS, ku dhowaad 1.5 milyan oo qof ayaa dareemay gariir ku dhow cabbirka 7. Hay'addu waxay sheegtay in dhulgariirrada qoto-dheer ay caadi ahaan ka khatar yar yihiin kuwa oogada u dhow, laakiin tamar ay sii daayaan waxay dhaawici kartaa dhismayaasha.
Jawaabta Caalamiga ah iyo Taageerada
Xoghayaha Arrimaha Dibadda Maraykanka Marco Rubio ayaa sheegay in Washington ay 'si dhow ula socoto' dhulgariirka, isla markaana ay 'diyaar u tahay inay taageerto' Colombia. Madaxa Midowga Yurub Ursula von der Leyen ayaa xaqiijisay adeegsiga dayax-gacmeedka Copernicus ee samatabbixinta.
Madaxweynaha El Salvador Nayib Bukele ayaa farriin garab istaag ah u diray shacabka Colombia, isagoo u fidiyay shaqaale iyo qalab samatabbixineed. Madaxweynaha cusub oo xilka la wareegay Jimcihii ayaa isla markiiba wajahaya dhacdo saamayn weyn ku yeelan karta muddadiisa xil.
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia early Monday morning, killing at least 132 people and damaging over 1,500 homes. The quake, centred 103 kilometres underground, was felt across hundreds of miles and triggered a national emergency declared by President Abelardo de la Espriella.
Widespread Destruction Across Coffee Belt Cities
The deadliest impact was recorded in Pereira, Colombia's coffee-growing capital, where at least 40 people died and 65 buildings collapsed. A curfew was imposed until 05:00 local time on Tuesday, while nearby Cali saw 32 structures destroyed. The epicentre was in the remote village of San José del Palmar, though local mayor Fabio Marín Moncada reported no casualties there.
Damage also spread to Manizales, where at least two people lost their lives, and Quibdó and Medellín. Eyewitness Angélica Ávila, staying at a hotel during the tremor, described the scene: 'Everyone was screaming... I saw smoke coming from neighbouring buildings.' Meanwhile, the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority confirmed disruptions at airports in Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago and Buenaventura.
International Aid Mobilised as Death Toll Expected to Rise
President-elect Nayib Bukele of El Salvador sent a message of solidarity and deployed rescue personnel and equipment to Colombia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the Copernicus satellite system would support search and rescue operations. The United States, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio, said Washington was closely monitoring the situation and ready to assist.
The quake occurred less than two months after deadly twin earthquakes in northern Venezuela killed more than 6,300 people. According to the US Geological Survey, nearly 1.5 million people felt shaking close to magnitude 7. Deep-focus quakes like this one tend to cause less surface shaking but can release significant energy that damages structures, with aftershocks likely to be fewer but more powerful.
Seismic Activity Felt Across Neighbouring Countries
The tremor was felt across a vast area of hundreds of miles, particularly in western Colombia, and shaking was recorded in neighbouring Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama. Manizales, which has experienced previous quakes, has strict building codes designed to withstand seismic activity. Local expert Luis Felipe Molina noted that the city's infrastructure held up better than expected, with only a handful of its 450-book library damaged.
Despite the magnitude, the deep focus of the earthquake at 103 kilometres meant the ground shaking was less intense than shallower quakes of similar strength. However, the energy released was enough to collapse buildings in populated areas like Pereira and Cali, where many structures were not built to seismic standards. The government is now reviewing the national budget to fund emergency response and recovery efforts.
