Louis Geri, a New Jersey native, was sentenced Monday to five years and 10 months in prison for transporting homemade explosive devices to a Washington, D.C. church preparing for the annual Red Mass honoring the Supreme Court's new term.
Arrest and Demands
On October 5, 2025, police arrested Geri outside the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, where officers were clearing the area before the ceremony. He had set up a tent containing more than 100 homemade explosives alongside a nine-page list of written demands.
Geri told police that several people would die if his demands were not met, threatening to destroy landmarks including the Washington Monument, the Supreme Court, and the White House. His demands included requests for money, an expatriation flight to Japan, and for the Supreme Court to remove Arizona from the United States.
Legal Proceedings and Mental Health
Geri pleaded guilty in March to two felony counts: illegal possession of a destructive device and extortion by wrongful use of force, violence or fear. He and prosecutors agreed that a prison term between five years and 10 months and seven years and three months would be appropriate.
Defense attorney Elizabeth Mullin stated that Geri's conduct was the product of a treatable medical condition spiraling out of control, not malice or an actual intent to harm. Geri was diagnosed with bipolar disorder more than two decades ago and had stopped taking his medication in the months leading up to his arrest.
Sentencing and Judge's Remarks
U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss sentenced Geri to five years and 10 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Moss said he balanced the danger Geri poses to the public with the defendant's history of very serious mental health issues and his need for adequate treatment.
The judge described the offense as extremely serious, noting that while it may have been carried out in a bizarre manner, the threat of violence was a serious one. Geri declined to address the court before being sentenced.
