Cap Ferret Peninsula Evacuated by Sea
French authorities ordered the total evacuation of the tourist Cap Ferret peninsula off the Atlantic coast, with many boarding boats to flee. Over 60,000 people left the area as the blaze consumed about 100 square kilometers of land. Authorities sent boats and small water taxis to assist the evacuation.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said a fire in Saumos was the largest in France this season and threatened to cut off the only road out. Some 1,500 arrivals reached Arcachon by sea and received coffee, fruit and water. A resident said: "It's quite impressive and even frightening."
Evacuations Across Southwest France

Spain Declares Wildfire National Emergency
Two fires converged near Madrid despite over 2,000 personnel and 10 aircraft deployed, said Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska. Over 19,000 people were ordered to evacuate mountainous towns west of the capital. Only emergency vehicles were allowed, with police checkpoints set up.
