Degmada Summerland ee British Columbia ayaa soo saartay amarro daad-gureyn kadib markii gobolku xaalad degdeg ah ku dhawaaqay Subaxnimadii Sabtida. Dab-goynta Bald Range wuxuu ku gubanayaa si aan la xakameyn karin, ayadoo khatartu ay si degdeg ah u kordhayso.
Amarrada Daad-gureynta iyo Saamaynta Degmada
Degmada Summerland waxay hoy u tahay qiyaastii 12,000 oo qof marka loo eego tirakoobkii 2021 (summerland-population). Premier David Eby wuxuu sheegay horraantii usbuucan in gobolku uu haysto kheyraad ku filan dab-goynta, isagoo leeyahay: 'For those in the area, please keep following updates. If asked to evacuate, go immediately. The conditions are changing extremely quickly.' (premier-eby-statement, eby-quotes).
Ciribtirka Cimilada iyo Dab-goynta Gobolka
Saynisyahano ayaa sheegay in isbeddelka cimiladu uu sii daray xaaladaha dab-goynta tobannaankii sano ee la soo dhaafay, iyadoo qaybo adduunka ka mid ah ay la kulmeen abaar iyo kuleyl baah (climate-change-wildfires). Amelia Boultbee waxay tiri: 'Summerland and Faulder and Peachland. Tonight our hearts are heavy as we watch the Bald Range wildfire. The firefighters and first responders are doing an incredible job and my heart is with them, as well as all the evacuees and volunteers.' (ameliaboultbee-quote).
A state of emergency was declared across British Columbia on Saturday morning as the Bald Range wildfire raged out of control, prompting mandatory evacuations for thousands in the Summerland district and surrounding communities.
Emergency Orders Hit Summerland and Neighbouring Communities
Evacuation orders issued Saturday morning cover the Peachland watershed, the Brenda Mines area, Lower Princeton and its downtown core, affecting roughly 12,000 residents in the Summerland district. Local officials confirmed that the area lost power due to the fire and instructed residents to boil water immediately.
All residents were asked to prepare to leave without delay. The urgency of the situation was underscored by the speed at which conditions were deteriorating, with authorities warning that the wildfire was burning out of control and threatening homes across the region.
Premier Eby Confirms Sufficient Resources Amid International Support
Premier David Eby stated earlier this week that British Columbia has sufficient resources to manage the fires, with additional firefighters and aircraft available. He urged residents to follow updates closely and to evacuate immediately if asked, noting that conditions were changing extremely quickly.
Approximately 1,500 firefighters are currently deployed across the province, which has issued 39 evacuation orders and 49 alerts. Firefighting teams from Mexico, Australia, France and New Zealand have also provided support to Canada in the effort to contain the blazes.
Climate Change and Heat Dome Exacerbate Wildfire Crisis
Scientists have warned that climate change has worsened wildfire conditions in recent decades, with areas across the globe experiencing periods of extreme drought and heat. In recent months, Canada and the United States experienced a record-setting heat dome that helped exacerbate wildfire conditions by drying out vegetation.
To the south of British Columbia, the US state of Washington also experienced large wildfires this month, contributing to poor air quality across the region. Canadian MP Amelia Boultbee expressed sorrow over the situation, saying the firefighters and first responders were doing an incredible job and her heart was with the evacuees and volunteers.
