German authorities identify 21-year-old Abdul Ballout as the perpetrator who killed one and injured 31 at the festival
German investigators say the suspect in the Berlin Pride attack pledged allegiance to ISIL in a video found on a phone in the rented minivan used in the attack. The assault killed a 65-year-old Polish woman and injured 31 people. The suspect was later shot dead by police.
Video evidence and minister's statement
The video was recorded on Saturday, the day of the attack, and showed a masked individual declaring loyalty to ISIL. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said in televised comments, 'We assume the person in the video is the suspect.' Investigators were analysing the phone from the vehicle.
Links to IS were also found on data storage devices in Ballout's home. Alongside the phone in the van was a sheath for the machete the attacker is thought to have used after the vehicle crashed into a tree in Tiergarten park.
Suspect background and prior record
Abdul Ballout, 21, was a German citizen with Lebanese roots and was known to the criminal justice system. He travelled to Lebanon in 2025 aiming to join ISIL in Syria and contacted presumed members. A Lebanese source said he was jailed three months there for ISIL ties.
On return to Germany he was detained and in May convicted by a juvenile court of planning serious subversive violence, receiving a suspended sentence of one year and 10 months. He was shot dead by police on Sunday after attacking officers with a bladed weapon.
Attack details and police response
The minivan drove into the Pride festival crowd on Saturday, killing the Polish woman and wounding 31. The suspect left the vehicle and used a bladed weapon before police shot him dead the next day. The video was discovered during the subsequent investigation.
Authorities continue to examine the phone and storage devices to confirm the full extent of ISIL links. The evidence so far includes the pledged allegiance video, the machete sheath in the van, and digital material from Ballout's residence.
