A TechCrunch reporter has become the first journalist to receive a personal digital avatar from Synthesia, the video-generation startup that recently reached a $4 billion valuation. The interactive version of the reporter is trained exclusively on her investigative piece about venture-backed startup fraud and will only answer questions related to that story.
How the Avatar Was Created
The reporter visited Synthesia's new New York office and agreed to have her own digital twin made. The team spent a couple of days taking numerous photos and capturing a two-minute voice recording inside a mini film studio at the company's headquarters.
Synthesia produced three versions: a personal avatar that reads any script, and two interactive avatars that can talk back and listen, each available with and without glasses. The interactive version is powered by a combination of voice-to-text, video, language, and text-to-voice models.
Testing the Deterministic Model
When the reporter's mother and father tried asking the avatar personal questions, the model did not answer and instead redirected them each time back to the venture fraud story. Her mother joked, 'I don't remember giving birth to two of you,' after testing the system.
Friends found the voice fairly accurate but noted the likeness was not as good as the personal avatar, though it was close enough to be somewhat creepy. The reporter noted that because the digital twins are deterministic, they will never say something unexpected or new.
What This Means for Journalism
The reporter questioned whether people would accept news presented by an avatar, noting that one investor told her immediately that they would not. She emphasized that the biggest part of journalism is trust, which does not seem like it could ever be outsourced to an AI.
Outside of journalism, the reporter said she is confident that cloning yourself could be appealing for handling work during holidays. However, she predicted that Gen Z likely won't get used to digital avatars because they feel sci-fi, even though she finds them less jarring than humanoids.
