Riot Games has confirmed it will cease active development on 2XKO, its free-to-play League of Legends fighting game, at the end of 2026, citing insufficient player retention to achieve long-term sustainability.
Why Development Is Ending
Riot says it evaluated the game's overall performance throughout 2025 and 2026, finding no meaningful, sustained change in 2XKO's trajectory despite new character releases and competitive events. The company stated that even in these highlight moments, only a fraction of what it would take to trend toward sustainability was observed. Over time it became clear it would be impossible to continue actively developing the game as it is today.
Riot emphasized that it would have continued development if it saw any viable future, but the costs substantially exceed revenue while engagement has remained relatively flat despite larger updates. The company noted that overall momentum has not reached the level needed to support a team of this size long term, leading to the decision to wind down active work.
What Happens to Players and Servers
Although active development will conclude at the end of 2026, Riot confirmed that servers for 2XKO will stay online beyond that date. To support the player community during the transition, the company is unlocking all playable characters and refunding money spent on the game. This approach aims to ensure players retain access to the content they have already purchased and enjoyed.
2XKO launched in an early access beta on PC in October 2025 and expanded to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in January 2026. Shortly after launch, Riot announced it would be cutting staff working on the game, citing that overall momentum had not reached the level needed to support a team of this size long term.
A Broader Trend in Live Service Games
2XKO is not an isolated case; it reflects a wider industry pattern where live service titles struggle to maintain momentum. Just this week, Bloomberg reported that Sony is stripping live service elements from its in-development multiplayer Horizon title, while Highguard permanently shut down less than two months after launch.
Other major studios have faced similar challenges. Remedy announced a final major update for FBC: Firebreak, its live service shooter set in the Control universe, though it has chosen to keep the game online. Even Fortnite is not immune, as Epic Games laid off staff in March following a downturn in engagement.
