Speaking in both French and English, the pontiff argued that judging people according to the criterion of efficiency risks undermining respect for human dignity, leading those who are no longer productive to be rejected and discarded. He warned that AI impoverishes human ideas and relationships through a process of dehumanisation.
The Pope stressed the need to ensure emerging technologies offer adequate safeguards for children, stating that the vulnerability of young people must never become an opportunity for exploitation. This comes as European policymakers grapple with protecting minors from online harms.
War, Nuclear Weapons and International Trust
Addressing the global situation, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the Vatican's staunch opposition to nuclear weapons, calling out the mistaken belief that nuclear deterrents provide solutions. He declared that humanity has come to realise that scientific progress, when severed from wisdom, can turn into a weapon of destruction.
Reflecting on international institutions, the pontiff called for greater trust, saying that sincere dialogue can bring about a greater good than what each person could achieve alone. His remarks come as the Trump administration's decision to withdraw from UNESCO takes effect in December 2026.
Right to Life and France's Constitutional Tensions
Earlier at the Elysée Palace, French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the Pope alongside diplomatic authorities and religious representatives. During his address, the pontiff reaffirmed the importance of the human right to life, qualifying it as the indispensable foundation to every other human right.
The comments arrive as France enshrined the right to abortion to its constitution in 2024 and passed a controversial law in favour of assisted dying earlier this year, reviving tensions between the Catholic Church and French politicians.
