Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince says automated bot traffic has overtaken human internet usage, with projections that the gap will widen to 1,000 times within five years, forcing a rethink of how the web is funded and governed.
The Scale of the Bot Problem
Cloudflare, which operates a network spanning over 350 cities and thousands of data centers worldwide, found in June that bots now account for more than half of all internet traffic. Prince says the company sits between websites and AI agents, giving site owners the ability to block, allow, or charge for access to automated tools.
The shift accelerated rapidly. At Web Summit last November, Prince predicted automated traffic would surpass human traffic in the second half of 2027. By March 2026 at South by Southwest, the timeline moved to the first half of 2027. Just months later, in May, Cloudflare confirmed that bots had already passed human traffic online.
A New Business Model for the Web
The traditional advertising model, which Google has defined for 28 years, does not work for bots because they do not click on ads or respond to brand imagery. Prince argues that the internet must develop a new payment framework to sustain the infrastructure demands of exploding bot traffic.
Content creators are increasingly demanding that bots pay for access, rejecting the old give-to-get model. Prince suggests a future where humans may receive free access while bots are required to pay, echoing the original intent of the 403 protocol written in Netscape, which was payment-related.
Internal Transformation and Bold Choices
Cloudflare recently laid off more than 1,000 employees, representing 20 percent of the company, as it restructures around AI. Prince wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled 'How I choose which Cloudflare employees to replace with AI,' drawing sharp attention to the company's internal shift.
Meanwhile, AI companies like Anthropic are generating enormous revenue, with one month adding $10 billion. Prince acknowledges that while there is a shortage of people who understand AI systems, universities are rebuilding their AI departments, and silicon supply constraints are expected to ease.
