European body says proposal to bring outside investors into Fifa subsidiary crosses a line that must not be crossed
Uefa has reacted furiously to Fifa proposals to seek private investment in its competitions including the World Cup. Uefa said the plan "crosses a line that football's governing institutions should never cross." Fifa intends to expand development funding beyond $10bn with third-party backing.
Fifa outlines commercial subsidiary with outside investors
Fifa says it will "invite third parties to make minority, non-controlling investments" in a new subsidiary called Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) to consolidate commercial and event operations. Thrive Eternal is expected to lead the investor group once approved.
Thrive is an American venture capital firm founded by Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner. Fifa states it would keep control of FFE and exclusive authority over governance, competitions and calendar. All member associations could access up to $20m in one-off capital.
Uefa warns against selling football's soul
Uefa issued a statement saying: "The soul and governance of football are not assets to trade - especially with zero transparency as to who gains financially. None of us are the owners of football. It is not Fifa's to sell."
Uefa sees the announcement as a step too far and warns of further Fifa competition expansion that could threaten its own events. It said: "Uefa takes it extremely seriously. So should every National Football Association. So should every stakeholder who cares about the future of the game."
Next steps and vote at Fifa Congress
The matter is likely to be discussed at the next Fifa Council meeting in autumn and around the Fifa Intercontinental Cup in December featuring Paris St-Germain. Fifa argues its subsidiary model resembles structures used by other sports bodies.
The proposal could be voted on by all 211 members at the Fifa Congress in Morocco in March. Infantino said: "Our job is to make sure the rest of football grows with it: Fifa exists to support sustainable, inclusive development in every corner of the world."
