UEFA will convene an emergency virtual meeting on Thursday afternoon to discuss its response to FIFA's controversial proposal to sell a 20% stake in World Cup competitions to private investors, following widespread backlash from member associations and global football bodies.
UEFA Urges FIFA to Drop Deadline
UEFA has called on FIFA to withdraw its ultimatum to member associations, stating that the deadline to accept the deal or lose the one-off payout reveals the true nature of the plan. The European governing body issued its second formal statement, warning that the proposal has crossed a significant line in football governance.
The meeting will be held virtually, though details on the specific agenda remain undisclosed. UEFA's unease is shared by Asian, South American, and North and Central American confederations, with three of the 2026 World Cup semi-finalists among UEFA's 55 members, making the financial viability of the tournament a critical concern for European football leadership.
FIFA Defends Proposal as Development Opportunity
FIFA president Gianni Infantino defended the stakeholder plan in a video released on Wednesday, describing it as an offer rather than an obligation and a golden opportunity to turbocharge global football development. He argued the funding would support better pitches, stronger national teams, more pathways for young players, and greater support for women's football.
FIFA highlighted the historic qualification of Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan for the World Cup as evidence of its positive impact, while asserting that private investors would have absolutely no influence over the tournament. The organisation cited Formula 1, La Liga, Ligue 1, and the Bundesliga as examples of sporting bodies using dedicated commercial operations.
Global Backlash from Associations and Unions
The Football Association, along with many other associations, expressed fury at discovering the proposal through media reports rather than advance notification. FA chairwoman Debbie Hewitt was among the FIFA vice-presidents not given prior warning, while the European Leagues organisation condemned the plans as a reckless and divisive development for world football.
La Liga president Javier Tebas accused Infantino of attempting to buy votes before the next FIFA congress in March, stating that development cannot be used to buy votes or silences. Hans-Joachim Watzke of Borussia Dortmund called the plans an absolute attack on football, warning that if European football stands united against them, it carries significant weight.
