A Record-Breaking Summer Signing

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez had promised to bid €150 million for a player during the club's election campaign in June, and the arrival of Diomande fulfils that pledge. From Florida Academy to Bundesliga Stardom

Diomande trained at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida, and after trials at clubs including AFC Bournemouth, Rangers, Crystal Palace and Chelsea, he signed for Leganés in January 2025 when he turned 18. Leganés coach Borja Jiménez was convinced after seeing him in a training match and immediately promoted him to the first team.

He made 10 LaLiga appearances between March and May 2025, including a start against Barcelona, and was named the Bundesliga's Rookie of the Season for 2025-26. His numbers were impressive: 20 goals, 12 goals and 8 assists, 17 big chances created, and 214 take-ons with a 55.1% success rate.

Fitting Into Mourinho's Attack Plan

Diomande played on the right wing for Leipzig last season and mostly on the left at the World Cup with Ivory Coast. Mourinho has lined the team up in a 4-2-3-1 formation in preseason, with the right wing calling out for an upgrade after Rodrygo, Franco Mastantuono and Brahim Díaz failed to make a convincing case.

Rodrygo suffered an ACL tear in March with no return date set, while Mastantuono made 23 LaLiga appearances but underwhelmed with one goal and no assists. All three of Madrid's coaches over the last two seasons have found it difficult to construct a functioning team featuring Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Bellingham.
