Tadej Pogacar, affectionately known as 'Pogi', secured his place alongside Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain as a five-time Tour de France champion. The Slovenia-born cyclist claimed five stage victories during the race to underline his dominance.
Remco Evenepoel of Belgium finished second overall, while Mexico's Isaac del Toro took third on the podium. Pogacar's route to the yellow jersey eased after Jonas Vingegaard withdrew following a crash on Stage 15 of the 2026 Tour.
Van der Poel wins shortened finale
Mathieu van der Poel, 31, won the final stage in a photo finish ahead of teammate Jasper Philipsen, with Mads Pedersen third. The pair broke away on Montmartre with about 10km left and finished at the Champs-Elysees after Stage 21 was cut to 89km due to wildfires.
Van der Poel said: 'The way it went, it's a dream. It's incredible. It was super hard, and to be up there with the best rider in the world, all my respect for Tadej.' He added: 'I'm super happy. I have a few races I still wanted to win in my career, and this was one of them.'
Race notes and rider thanks
The Grand Depart was in Barcelona, and for the first time no rider from France, Italy or Spain won a stage in the 2026 Tour de France. Pogacar said: 'Thank you to all the fans and to all of France for hosting this great race.'
