Four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen has extended his contract with Red Bull until the end of 2030, revealing that he was 'closer to retiring than changing teams' after facing existential doubts about the sport's new hybrid engine regulations.
Engine Frustrations Sparked Doubt
Verstappen's frustrations boiled over after the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, where the new hybrid engines' limitations became too much to bear. The need to constantly recover energy and the impossibility of fully charging batteries at all times robbed drivers of 470bhp before the end of long straights, making overtakes depend on power offsets rather than pure skill. By 2028, the split between internal combustion and electrical power will shift to 60:40, but for now, the artificiality of the racing remains a source of deep discontent for the Dutchman.
The new regulations introduced in 2026 have caused Verstappen to question whether he even wants to continue racing in this form of motorsport. He pondered aloud whether it was worth it or if he would enjoy being more at home with his family and friends. His experience at the Nurburgring 24 Hours, where he raced a Red Bull-branded Mercedes AMG GT and finished first in his first stint, only highlighted what he felt F1 had lost. The car's driveshaft failure robbed him of victory, but the thrill of the race remained unforgettable.
Contract Extension Signals Commitment
Verstappen told Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies, 'Don't come to me with any kind of questions about the future,' because he did not even know if he wanted to stay. The new contract involves a small pay bump and leaves Verstappen with options to leave if expected performance is not delivered, reflecting a demonstration of trust between the driver and the team. Despite Mercedes being long-time suitors and McLaren also having talks with him, Verstappen remains focused on his goal of finishing his career at Red Bull, a target he set when Dietrich Mateschitz was still alive.
The deal also allows Verstappen to pursue extracurricular activities, such as the Nurburgring 24 Hours, without pushback from Red Bull, which he described as a 'big plus.' Mekies emphasized that feeling good where you are is essential, and the open, transparent relationship between Verstappen and the team has been a key factor in his decision. Verstappen acknowledged that while he is not entirely happy with the current engine regulations, he still loves racing and believes the sport is slowly working towards something better.
Future Regulations Offer Hope
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is pushing for naturally aspirated V8 engines, ideally with no hybrid at all, but Audi and Mercedes would prefer turbocharged engines. The debate over the next engine regulations, due by 2031 at the latest, has already begun, with teams and drivers warning the FIA about energy starvation issues for over two years. Verstappen noted that the upcoming discussions about V8s could open new doors, and he remains optimistic that the sport is making progress towards a more enjoyable driving experience.
Verstappen's decision to stay at Red Bull is partly driven by his belief that the sport is evolving positively. He said, 'I love racing. I had a lot of very good discussions with F1, but also with the FIA. And I think we are slowly working towards something that becomes better and better.' The new contract extends his tenure at Red Bull, but it also keeps his future options open, ensuring that if the team does not deliver expected performance, he retains the freedom to explore other opportunities.
