Why the Big Three Are Delayed
Seven Spanish clubs had players in the FIFA World Cup semifinals, and four of them were scheduled to play each other on Matchday 1. The Spanish Players' Union (AFE) and LaLiga agreed that teams with semifinal representation could delay their games to allow players adequate rest between seasons.
Celta Vigo's opener against Osasuna was postponed due to a fungus outbreak on their pitch, not a player rest request. The other six clubs — Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético, Real Betis, Athletic Club, and Real Sociedad — all invoked the AFE agreement to push their fixtures back by several days.
New Openers and Preseason Friendlies
Atlético Madrid host Málaga at the Metropolitano on Wednesday, their earliest return. Barcelona visit Elche on August 23, while Real Madrid travel to Espanyol the same day. Madrid play Real Sociedad on August 26, and Barcelona host Athletic Club on August 27.
Real Madrid will play one final preseason friendly at Schalke this Sunday. Barcelona have two more friendlies: a visit to Basel and hosting Al Ahly in the Gamper Trophy at Camp Nou.
Other Storylines to Watch
Villarreal finished third last season, three points ahead of Atlético, and have appointed Iñigo Pérez as manager after Marcelino's departure. Real Betis have signed left-back Fran García, while Celta Vigo brought in Aleix Febas to strengthen their midfield.
Rayo Vallecano face a crisis: their Vallecas stadium is deemed unfit by Madrid's regional government, so they will play home games at Leganés' Butarque. They have also lost Pep Chavarría to Chelsea and Nobel Mendy to Hull City, and hired Beñat San José to replace Iñigo Pérez.
