Victory sets stage for proposed Fury meeting later this year
Anthony Joshua knocked out Kristian Prenga in the second round of a non-title heavyweight fight in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday. The bout was viewed as his final step before a possible showdown with Tyson Fury. Joshua rose after two first-round knockdowns to win.
Joshua's comeback after early trouble
Joshua was floored by an uppercut inside 30 seconds of the first round and was knocked down a second time by Prenga, but rose before the count ended. He survived to the bell and finished Prenga with a right hook in the second round, sending him through the ropes.
Prenga entered with a 20-1 record and 20 KOs, while Joshua improved to 30-4 with 27 KOs. Oleksandr Usyk watched from ringside and was shocked by the turnaround. The former two-time world champion acknowledged friends lost in a December crash after the fight.
Tribute to lost friends
Joshua survived a car crash in Nigeria in December that killed his friends Sina Ghami and Latif 'Latz' Ayodele. He acknowledged them straight after the bout and said: 'That was spirit. That was Latz and Sina. That was the family. You know what I mean? That hurts even talking about it.'
He added: 'He [Prenga] gave me a good test, but this is what champions do: we rise. We get knocked down and stand up. That is life; that is life's motto.' The fight was his first since the crash and a non-title heavyweight contest in Jeddah.
Path to Fury showdown
Joshua's manager Eddie Hearn claims Joshua and Fury signed a contract to meet later this year if both win warm-up bouts this weekend. Fury came out of retirement in 2026 and forced 46-year-old Polish journeyman Mariusz Wach to retire in round seven in Pattaya, Thailand.
Joshua told the crowd about fighting Fury: 'I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat.' The Jeddah win kept alive the all-British encounter. The fight was seen as Joshua's final step before the proposed Fury showdown this year.
