Wenger and Grafstrom Back Away from Proposal
Arsene Wenger, who oversees FIFA's global football development, said scrapping the plan was 'absolutely necessary and beyond question'. He revealed he was not involved in the strategic plan and first learned of it through media reports.
Mattias Grafstrom, FIFA's secretary general and a close ally of Infantino, described the past week as 'a sad and reproachable series of events' in an internal email to staff, calling the turmoil 'difficult to comprehend and accept'. He urged colleagues to remain focused on serving the 211 member associations.
Prince Ali Accuses FIFA of Blackmail Over Prize Money
Prince Ali, president of the Jordanian Football Association, accused FIFA of creating a situation which 'amounts to blackmail' over unpaid prize money from the FIFA Arab Cup in December. He claimed FIFA tried to use the debt to secure his endorsement of Infantino's re-election.
Ali, who has twice run for the FIFA presidency, said Jordan supporters with tickets had been denied visas to enter the United States to watch their debut World Cup appearance. He stated that FIFA had refused to help Jordan for months before verbally communicating the deal during the World Cup.
Infantino Seeks Resolution Amid Leadership Crisis
Infantino issued a statement through FIFA demanding 'transparency and integrity' from the body, while calling the meeting in Rabat as he attempts to find a solution to the controversy. Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino's senior adviser, is the only official to resign, calling the proposal 'a bad deal for football'.
Wenger is one of 18 FIFA officials named in a document preservation letter UEFA sent to FIFA threatening legal action. The meeting was called as Infantino attempts to find a solution to the controversy, with FIFA approached for further comment.
