Fifa president Gianni Infantino is set to meet senior Fifa executives in Rabat on Wednesday as criticism of his scrapped commercial plan intensifies, with key figures calling the proposal a 'bad deal for football' and questioning his leadership.
Executive Meeting in Morocco
Infantino summoned members of the Fifa management board to his Africa office in Rabat for an urgent meeting on Wednesday. The gathering will include secretary general Mattias Grafstrom, finance chief Thomas Peyer, legal chief Emilio Garcia Silvero, chief of staff Daniel O'Toole, chief of member associations Elkhan Mammadov and media relations director Bryan Swanson.
The meeting comes after secretary general Grafstrom sent a highly critical internal memo to Fifa staff, describing the past week as 'a sad and reproachable series of events' which were 'difficult to comprehend and accept'. The gathering is expected to be a key moment as Infantino attempts to rebuild support and secure his position.
Widespread Criticism and Resignations
Arsene Wenger insisted he was 'not involved' in the Fifa Forward Enterprise proposal, adding that aborting it was 'absolutely necessary and beyond question'. Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino's senior adviser on global strategy and governance, quit on Friday, calling the plan 'a bad deal for football' that would 'mortgage football's future'.
Kevin Lamour, Fifa's chief operating officer, said the private investment plan was 'the project of one person' and that Fifa's own administration was 'deceived'. Prince Ali of the Jordanian Football Association accused Fifa of creating a situation which 'amounts to blackmail' over unpaid prize money and support for Infantino's re-election.
Path to Removal and Future Challenges
Uefa has lost confidence in Infantino's leadership, and several member associations, including Wales, have withdrawn support for his re-election. The Fifa Council could force an emergency meeting if 19 of the 37 members call for one, while an extraordinary congress of the 211 member associations could be triggered if 43 associations make a written request.
Infantino stood unopposed when re-elected in 2019 and 2023, and the deadline to announce candidacy for the Fifa Congress in March is 18 November. Concacaf president Victor Montagliani is seen as the most likely unity candidate to stand against Infantino, though success is uncertain given the high vote threshold required.
