United States Soccer Federation president Cindy Parlow Cone has indicated that talks with Mauricio Pochettino regarding a contract extension are progressing positively, with an announcement expected in the coming days.
Contract Talks Progressing Well
Parlow Cone told Apple TV that discussions with Pochettino and his staff have been going very well, suggesting a potential announcement soon. She stated, 'I think we should have something to announce in the coming days.'
Pochettino first joined U.S. Soccer in 2024 on a two-year contract that expired after the 2026 World Cup, replacing former manager Gregg Berhalter. The federation reportedly wants to retain him for another four-year cycle through the 2030 World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Pochettino Evaluating the Offer
On July 16, Pochettino revealed on Spanish radio Cadena Cope that he and his staff were reviewing the federation's proposal. He said, 'We are evaluating it, looking at it. [U.S. Soccer] have made me an offer to continue, and we will see. Next week we will [make] a decision.'
Earlier in May, Pochettino and U.S. Soccer discussed the possibility of an extension. CEO JT Batson asked if they were open to a four-year project, to which Pochettino replied, 'Of course, we are open. Do you think that if we commit to other people, we are going to waste time listening?'
2026 World Cup Performance
Pochettino led the U.S. men's national team through the 2026 World Cup, topping Group D with wins against Australia and Paraguay before defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32.
The USMNT was eliminated in the round of 16 after falling 4-1 to Belgium. The team is now slated to return to action for friendlies during the September FIFA international window.
