Patrice Motsepe wuxuu 22 July yidhi: 'He is loyal to Africa. When people have been loyal to you, you never stab them in the back'. Isha Johansen ayaa ka mid ahayd diiddanayaashii, halka Senegal aan weli ka hadlin.
The Confederation of African Football (Caf) executive committee has unanimously confirmed its support for Gianni Infantino, with five of seven African Fifa Council members already publicly endorsing the president following the withdrawal of the controversial Forward Enterprise proposal.
Caf and Key African Federations Endorse Infantino
Late on Thursday, the Caf executive committee unanimously confirmed its backing of Infantino, following a wave of messages from leading African football administrators. The Congolese Football Federation (Fecofa) also welcomed the withdrawal of the Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal, calling it 'wise' in a statement signed by president Véron Mosengo‑Omba, who assured Infantino of 'full support' beyond 2027.
Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) president Fouzi Lekjaa described the decision as 'wise', adding it put the unity of Fifa's 211 member associations first. The Congolese federation stressed that the episode, born of good intentions, should not overshadow Infantino's wider record of supporting African federations with fewer resources.
African Voices Defend Infantino's Leadership
Caf president Patrice Motsepe lauded Infantino for his 'excellent work' after this year's World Cup, saying on 22 July: 'He is loyal to Africa. When people have been loyal to you, you never stab them in the back.' South Africa's Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, also posted that Infantino had been 'very good to African football'.
The Gambia Football Federation's Lamin Kaba Bajo said: 'As far as I'm concerned, most of my colleagues are concerned, we'll encourage him [Infantino] to stay, and we'll do everything within our means to ensure that he is re-elected come next year, 2027.' Meanwhile, Malawi FA president Fleetwood Haiya told BBC's Newsday: 'Malawi needs money. Malawi needs stadiums, our government cannot manage to give us even $1m every year for football'.
Funding Reliance and Growing Expectations
Support from the continent largely stems from Fifa's Forward programme, introduced by Infantino in 2016, which many African federations have become increasingly reliant on to fund projects where commercial and government investment is limited. Nigeria, eligible for up to $8m (£5.95m), is currently using Forward funding for the redevelopment of the NFF Technical Centre in Abuja, a project costing approximately $4.88m.
However, growing expectations in Egypt argue that Fifa's engagement with Africa should extend beyond financial assistance, with greater emphasis on good governance, transparency and sustainable football development. Former Sierra Leone FA president Isha Johansen opposed the Forward proposal, warning it risked over-commercialising football and asking: 'What price does one have to pay in order to get to this elevated development for football in Africa?'
